Poverty – something that we all try to avoid, whether it is the beggar in the street or the mere concept
of someone going hungry. Now consider that the someone is a child, a school-going child who has to
make it through an entire day of learning without knowing when the next meal will come. Sure there
are school feeding schemes but they can only reach so many people.

ven if you could help, on whatever scale, would you know where to go
to find these children in need? And if you did, how would you determine
which children needed help the most? Nungu Marketing and Distribution is
a marketing company active in townships around South Africa. It handles
marketing and distribution services for a number of large corporate clients and
assists them in their CSI Programmes. Twice a year between May and June and
again between October and December it distributes food parcels on behalf of two
major clients, Tiger Brands CSI and Vodacom CSI. Distribution is based on a set
list of recipients and beneficiaries many of whom are schools in and around
township communities throughout South Africa.
In both cases Nungu Marketing and Distribution is given a budget and a number
of recipients and has to make the most of the allocated amount to create food
parcels. The Tiger Brands food parcel programme is designed to reach 15 000
recipients in seven provinces, while the Vodacom programme reaches 40 000
recipients in three provinces. The mid-year programmes culminate in the
Mandela Day celebrations.
Nungu Marketing and Distribution handles all elements of the food parcels from
negotiating with suppliers and sourcing the food items, bucket containers, and
then packaging and distributing the parcels. Handling such a large project can be
something of a logistical nightmare. It is handled on a project management level.
A core team of Nungu Marketing and Distribution employees travels around the
country to the various temporary packing and distribution centres. This team
comprises 20 staff members who are experienced and understand the logistics
and requirements. They oversee a veritable army of casual workers who are
employed in the local area. The workers – as many as 50 depending on the size
of the individual project – are broken into teams with responsibility for packing
the food parcels, stacking them and preparing for distribution.
Nungu Marketing and Distribution uses its own trucks and vehicles to handle
the delivery of the food parcels. The same vehicles which are usually used for the
distribution of marketing material for its clients.
