MEDO showcases
SA opportunities for
UK big business
I
n celebration of Lunch Bar’s 50th golden anniver-
sary, the brand collaborated with the talented de-
sign entrepreneurs AfrikanSwiss and Skinny Sbu
Socks to develop a Lunch Bar-inspired range. The
limited edition clothing range, consisting of T-shirts
and socks pays homage to young design trend-
setters by celebrating and rewarding their talents.
The Lunch Bar-inspired campaign launched in
March 2015 when a live design stunt by Afrikan-
Swiss opened SA Fashion Week. From this point
on it was ‘oviaas’ that much more inspiration was
to follow when South African consumers were
asked to join in the celebration by creating and
posting their Lunch Bar-inspired designs to
www.
facebook.com/LunchBarSA
, using the hashtag
#LunchBar50.
To further drive the campaign consumers gath-
ered at the Lunch Bar pop-up design activations
held in Braamfontein and Johannesburg CBD in
April. Here a Lunch Bar-Inspired Mini Cooper, sport-
ing a fold out workstation, offered participants a
space where they could let their creativity flow by
capturing their designs straight onto blank t-shirts
and socks.
By submitting their designs, participants stood
a chance of becoming one of the two consumers
whose designs form part of the limited edition
range consisting of 100 t-shirts across four unique
designs and 100 pairs of socks across two designs.
The talented winners, Gideon Monaise of Soweto
Johannesburg for his ‘Oviaas’ T-shirt design and
Kirsten Kearns of Kuilsrivier in Cape Town for her
‘feet of Africa’ sock design were each rewarded
with R5000 in cash for their Lunch Bar-Inspired
creations. In addition, Ntuki Mashili from Pretoria,
won the main lucky draw prize of an AfrikanSwiss
custom designed outfit valued at R7 000.
‘Each of the selected designs tell a Lunch Bar-
inspired story, capturing not only the brand’s rich
heritage and colours, but also reflecting the spirit of
the fans who are ultimately the driving force behind
this iconic, truly South African chocolate bar,’ said
Meredith Kelly, Mondelez Category Lead for Choco-
late. ‘We are grateful to all of those who shared
their designs and talents with us and for being part
of Lunch Bar’s 50th anniversary celebration with
such enthusiasm.’
As a final reward, Lunch Bar will be giving away
a number of limited edition Lunch Bar-inspired ham-
pers valued at R500 each. These in-demand ham-
pers will include a Lunch Bar-inspired AfrikanSwiss
T-Shirt, a pair of Skinny Sbu Socks and delicious

EDO– one of South Africa’s leading specialists in
Supplier, Enterprise and Economic Development
– is currently showcasing the true value of trans-
formation in the South African economy, as well as op-
portunitiesforUK-basedbusinessestoexpandoperations
into Southern Africa at a supplier development focussed
event at South Africa House in London. This is the first
of a series of bi-annual medo.london events to be held
at South Africa House. MEDO is no stranger to the UK,
as the past few years have seen the organisation visiting
the thriving metropolis’ business districts and the iconic
South African institution when conducting international
trade delegations with South African entrepreneurs.
In addition to talking to interested parties about the
opportunities for UK businesses in SA, MEDO will also
inform delegates that the potential for increased trade
between SouthAfrica and theUnited Kingdom is boosted
with the a partnership between the UK Trade & Invest-
ment (UKTI) andMEDO.
While many of the organisation’s activities do – and
will continue to – centre around the development of the
entrepreneurial sector in South Africa, assisting corpo-
rates with achieving their BBBEE goals and paving the
way for multinationals to operate with compliance in the
country, MEDO has recently embarked on extending the
transformation agenda by targeting school going young
women aged 16 to 18. The reason for this is that in its
workings with larger international corporations, the team
identified a need for technical skills development in SA –
and what better age to target in terms of the future than
students?
As a seasoned implementer of private sector funded
economic development programmes, MEDO has identi-
fied a shortage of technical skills required for building
businesses and has therefore, embarked on what is
called the ‘Women in STEM’ programme to promote the
selection of maths and science as high school subjects.
‘This programme is crucial in reversing the lingering
legacy of apartheid, which excluded maths and science
from the curriculum of non-white children. Today’s chil-
dren are not brought up in technically passionate house-
holds and the number of technical degree applicants is
decreasing year-on-year,’ said Judi Sandrock, Co-Founder
and CEO of MEDO.
