How a recipe book proved that passion and partnerships outweigh budget

In a time when resources are tight but the need for purpose-driven storytelling is greater than ever, Edge Communications has set a new benchmark for non-profit public relations. The successful launch of the Dek die Tafel recipe book on 22 May 2025, was a collaboration with Ons Tuis and Lig in Duisternis Publishers.

Born from a dream in 2023 to preserve the culinary heritage of elderly residents in retirement homes, Dek die Tafel evolved into much more than a recipe book. It became a living archive of culture, memory and generational love. What set this project apart was not only the depth of its content but the strategy and collaboration that carried it from concept to completion.

‘With minimal financial resources, we focused on the strength of relationships,’ explains Daleen Gouws, Managing Director of Edge Communications. ‘We tapped into our existing network, building bridges between stakeholders, including Lig in Duisternis Publishers, Ons Tuis and cultural institutions such as the SA Akademie vir Wetenskap en Kuns. Our role was to not only manage communication, but to facilitate every step in the process.’

The success of the campaign is rooted in strategic relationship-building and the belief that sincerity in storytelling wins hearts. Edge Communications handled every aspect from recipe collection, testing and photography, to securing media attention and cultural funding. Instead of outsourcing, they leaned into community strengths: retirement home staff helped with food preparation; residents and families contributed memories; even the photography props came from within the team’s own collections to keep costs low and authenticity high.

‘We believe that meaningful campaigns don’t need inflated budgets. They need real stories, collaboration and the courage to reach out and ask for help,’ Gouws adds.

According to Schalk Strauss, Head of publication at Lig in Duisternis Uitgewers, Edge Communications are a valuable partner to them, not only for the effectiveness with which they manage their marketing but also for their genuine care for our communities. ‘They handled this project with the same dignity, professionalism, and efficiency that they would apply to respected and well-known institutions,’ said Strauss.

As a blueprint for NGOs and non-profits, the Dek die Tafel recipe book stands as a testament that big impact can be made with limited resources, when there’s heart behind the work and the right people at the table.
