he more the speed of daily living increases, the more we expect our technology to become
mobile. We see it in demand for items such as tablets and smartphones – technology which
we just cannot live without. We have access to information anywhere, anytime, all the time.
But is this really the future, and if it continues at its current pace what will the end result be? Retinal
implants that will allow you to view information directly through your eyeball without any external
devices are already being touted. Not just wearable connectivity but connectivity that is part of your
very being. That could give a whole new meaning to sensory and information overload. Who
remembers the Keanu Reeves movie – Johnny Mnemonic?
While we are clearly not there yet, it is interesting to note that the younger generations, the ones which
will be determining our futures one day, are already setting a slower pace. If you are fortunate enough –
or unfortunate depending on your perspective or irritation level – to have teen age kids you will find that
they have become very adept at ignoring or overlooking anything that is not of interest to them. They
are also the generation which, although technologically far superior to most of us, are reverting to the
use of paper for the most important information.
When last did you forget to have a meal? Did you actually need a device to remind you that you had not
eaten or are those rumbling pains in your abdominal area enough of a reminder? If you are not doing
enough exercise, you should be very well aware of the fact and you will either do something about it or
continue to find every excuse imaginable because you don’t want to do it. Do you really need a device
to tell you that you only stood up 14 times during the entire working day? Technology is great, don’t get
me wrong, I am a real technophile. I am always amazed by the capabilities of the human mind to create
devices, which can improve our lives in every way possible, but I think some of the developments are
being pushed on us rather than being the result of a real human need.
With all this talk about technology, I am pleased to inform you that we have added a Tech Review
section, which we hope will become a regular feature of the magazine. If you would like us to review
your piece of equipment or software, please contact us and we can make the necessary arrangements.
In closing we have a special offer from one of our advertisers in this issue. Should you require the
services of a professional photographer, Ignus Gerber Productions is offering readers of Nex Media a
25 percent discount on a full-day or half-day event photo shoot. Simply see the strip on the bottom
of page 29, call the number and quote the reference and you will qualify for a discount on any
Johannesburg-based event shoot.
Till next time, enjoy
