MTN Radio Awards proves growth in community radio

After an intensive adjudication process encompassing at least 2000 hours of listening and scoring, the finalists in the 2014 MTN Radio Awards have been announced.

‘The overall quality of the entries was excellent and competition at the top of the categories was extremely close,’ said Lance Rothschild, CEO of the MTN Radio Awards. ‘One thing that has been noticed and even commented on by the various adjudicators is the standard of radio in South Africa, which is excellent and most certainly on a par with some of the best radio elsewhere in the world. I certainly believe that the MTN Radio Awards has contributed to an increased focus on excellence and has raised the overall standard of the industry.’

‘The MTN Radio Awards is an important initiative for MTN as it creates the opportunity for us to increase our involvement with the radio industry, which has played a vital role in the life of the MTN brand,’ said Brian Gouldie, Chief Marketing Officer of MTN. ‘We are really happy with the way that these awards are accepted, and by the broad participation that they generate across all sectors of the radio industry. The improvement in the overall standards of radio content in South Africa is complete vindication of our commitment to the MTN Radio Awards and I wish to congratulate all participants, particularly the finalists on their excellent work.’

‘The Media Connection is very proud of the sheer number of community radio stations that entered the 2014 MTN Radio Awards, and excited for the stations which have been announced as finalists,’ said Judy Milne, Director of The Media Connection. ‘The vast number of community radio nominations listed below is evidence of not only the medium’s rapid growth, but the impact that these stations have within their community,’ she added.
