Khethi Ngwenya named one of the youngest top 30 entrepreneurs in Africa

Khethi Ngwenya – MD of SchoolMedia was recently named one the youngest top 30 entrepreneurs by Forbes Africa. Growing up in Soweto and Alberton, Ngwenya said that he found it fun to sell things as a kid. He started as an entrepreneur at the tender age of six – selling hair products in his uncle’s shop. At the age of 12, he had his own stall where he sold firecrackers and goods to the local community. He joined the Soweto Business Chambers organisation – Y.E.S (Young Entrepreneurs of Soweto) at the age of 15. This is where he was first introduced to the formal business world. A year later, he was elected as the CEO of Y.E.S.

Khethi’s passion is to develop communities by creating opportunities within these communities by exposing them to what the world has to offer. The founding of SchoolMedia in 2010 was led by his entrepreneurial spirit and aspiration to positively contribute to the economic development of the continent.

In 2011, he started the Going Green Project which managed to educate 100 school on environmental awareness and planted 4500 trees in schools across South Africa. SchoolMedia secured advertising rights in 9 000 schools across South Africa in 2012 and was nominated for the 702 talk radio small business awards in 2013. In 2014, Khethi attended a Media UK small business incubation program. He was nominated as a Global Shaper in 2015.

Ngwenya started SchoolMedia because he saw a gap in the educational market and wanted to provide young people with relevant information. SchoolMedia – 100 per cent black owned media company has grown into a successful and effective platform through which to communicate with South Africa’s youth and learners in the school environment. The company’s goal is to build and inform communities by connecting them with relevant products and services from both the private and public sectors and by re-investing a portion of the company’s turnover into CSI and Green projects in the schools within which it operates.

SchoolMedia aims to connect communities ‘one school at a time’ via display systems, outdoor signage, school activations and other media products making information and advertising available to students, their families and educators in the schools.

Not only has Khethi set the bar high for other young South Africans with this entrepreneurial media company appealing to companies across the board targeting the youth market, but also with his level of social awareness in uplifting schools.
